I bought my first home last year after getting married, also for the first time, and that means I have had the freedom to do things to the structure I live in. this meant that I could unpack all the tools I've been amassing over the last 38 years, spread them all out, and figure out what the hell I am gonna do with them. I found rapidly that I have too much crap and not enough space. This lead me to start researching storage and workspace options, and that lead me to get a few more tools, and now I'm ready to start working on long term solutions for my workshop.
It's a basement, unfinished, with inconvenient electrical outlets and concrete walls that are so hard they tie nails in knots when shot from the driver.
I have a workbench. I have a Delta 10 inch bandsaw. I have a Dewalt 745 table saw. I have a ton of hand tools.
I guess my goal is twofold, I want to have a space that I can use to perform home repair and improvement projects. I also want to use this space for some artistic stuff. My first project art wise is going to be some display cases for my collection of Judo club patches. I expect this is going to take a while, because I don't know too much about this. I had plenty of shop in High School and loved it, and then did some not terribly skilled construction labor for a few years, and am fairly handy, but I am fully aware of how little I know about this. That's primarily because of my good friend Ben. He's a VERY skilled scenic carpenter and woodworker, and seeing the stuff he turns out is humbling to say the least.
Anyhow, I'm hear to read a lot, maybe try to ask come intelligent questions down the road. I'd like to learn something before I lose a thumb or succumb to solvent inhalation.

Hey everyone,

This is the update I promised in my last posting. Finally got a decent picture of the progress I have made so far with the mirror project.

As you can see, it is getting closer to a finished state. Still have a little bit of work to be done, but am getting really close.

Still haven't decided how to finish it yet. She wants to hang it in the master bedroom, but everything in the master bedroom is a dark mocha color, almost a black color.

I really don't want it to be that dark, but not sure what else to do. Any ideas are appreciated.

Hey guys and gals,

Since I just got done posting about the mirror project I have been working on, I thought I would share a small piece that I recently completed for the wife.

My wife loves to take candy to work, especially M & M's and Skittles, small things that she can snack on throughout the day. The biggest problem she has, is that she works in a doctor's office and can't have candy wrappers and what not laying on her desk for all the patients to see.

So I proposed the idea of a small round box for her to keep her candy in. It would be both stylish and handy to have. She liked the idea and I set to work making one for her.

There were already plans for a round sundry box that Michael Tyler from Carvebuddy.com had posted on the Carvewright site. I decided to take his project and modify it a bit. Here is what I came up with.

Hey everyone,

Just updating things a bit on the mirror project that I started documenting in my earlier posts.

There hasn't been much progress made since my last posting. I've been dealing with numerous other things, and had to put it aside for a while.

I have finally gotten a chance to do some more work on it. I have gotten most of the inside area cleaned out, but still have a little more to do before it is ready for sanding.

I am using a delta scrollsaw to help clean out most of the bigger areas where the carve didn't make it through the board. I am also using different files to cut down the sharp edges some and round them over a bit. I'm really glad that the gentleman that is allowing me access to his tools has multiple sizes of files, becasue there are a lot of smaller areas that a normal sized file won't reach.

Sorry, there are not any pics at this time, as I don't keep my camera at work. But, I'm gonna bring it to the office tomorrow and take a few to upload so everyone can see the progress being made.

I am now hoping to have it completed within the next 2-3 weeks, if everything goes as planned.

Thanks for reading.

at work with this guy, Alex (aka atauer) at a CNC Woodworking company called LHR Technologies. We make a little machine call the CarveWright and the CompuCarve. I spent a lot of time on our forum and it is a great place to go for help with that machine and it projects. However, I found that I couldn't joke around freely at will and just be a regular person on that forum. Especially when it got out that worked for the company on the forum. So, Alex found the "Zone" and told me to come on over. Well, I did and I haven't looked back since. I monitor the other forum still but I like being over here since I can talk about woodworking when I want to, I can joke when I want to. Heck, we can talk politics and then now go take an online class on project building. How could anyone beat that? That's my story on how I came to be a member of this awesome forum and I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.

My list has gotten so long that I have had fell into the time honored trap of doing nothing. Perhaps if I post up my list of have-to-dos and want-to-dos, I might actually do some of them.

1. Finish rearranging shop
2. Build another bench for fine work
3. Build thickness sander
4. Build bending jig (for acoustic guitar sides)
5. Build binding jig (for binding acoustic guitar)
6. Build acoustic guitar
7. Build wooden plane
8. Build infill plane
9. Build CNC machine
10. Build electric guitar
11. Build Krenov cabinet that is a humidor

Oh man... I'm screwed. :lmao:

I finally received the piece today. I opened the package and found that all of the packing material had been destroyed or crushed.

My heart dropped at seeing the sight. After digging through the material, I found the piece. It had not been harmed one bit.

Boy was I nervous!

It still has a lot of touch up work that needs to be done on it. The area around "Michelle" was supposed to have carved through, but the stock must have been a little thicker than first thought. A few days worth of touch-up work and I should be ready to finish.

Here are a few images of what it looks like, straight out of the box. Nothing has been done to it at this point.

with an idea. My wife had asked for a mirror that she could mount on the wall above our dresser. I was hesitant to get her one, but I finally caved. However, I was gonna do it my way.

I work at a lovely woodcarving company named Carvewright. You may have heard of us. Our CNC machine is getting pretty popular. Anyways, I used the software for the machine to design an extremely nice frame for the mirror. I spent numerous days working on the design, trying to get it just right. After working my butt off, I finally got it.

There was just one problem. I did not have a machine to use to carve the project and I couldn't hijack one of the test machines at work.

So a buddy of mine stepped in and offered to carve the project for me, basically for free! The only issue was that I had to send the project file to him. So I loaded it onto a removable media drive and off it went through the regular mail. The project encountered a few snags along the way: snowstorms, death of a close family friend, move into a new house, holidays, etc. It finally got to his place in PA a few days before Christmas.

My friend Chris immediately got to work on the project. After almost a day in the machine carving and a few complaints from his wife, it finally finished carving. Its currently on its way back to me, here in Texas. Its due to arrive tomorrow, if all goes well.

I'll have a few things to do before it is complete, such as sanding and finishing, but I know the wife will love it.

You can see a few of the pictures by clicking on the following link. It will take you to the Carvewright forum, where we have a thread all to this project.

http://forum.carvewright.com/showthread.php?t=9709

I'll post both before and after pictures both here and there when I finish the project. I'm sure that the members of both forums will love the finished piece and I know that everyone at Carvewright is waiting anxiously to see it. :)

Well, that's all for now. Type to you later!

Now the the flooding danger has passed through my area, and I finished cleaning the shop out from the record rainfall. I can finelly get back to the fiddles. So many things distract us from our planed day, that it seems we never get the days planed projects done.

I come in and get on this site and always find something new, weather, jokes, and most of all the new skills and procedures for doing different things.

Every day we learn something, the day we stop learning, well I guss it's toes up and in the box.

So keep learning new stuff for your own health.:)

If you do this every day, you can bring happiness to 365 kids a year.

Not only will the kids be happy, you will have the satisfaction of helping and using that half hour of wasted time we sit fliping through the channels looking for something to watch on the TV every day.:)

Since Monday I've been working off and on a case. Come to find out today that the problem I thought I was fixing they fixed Tuesday based on my recommendations. The problem they are fixing now happens every night at about the same time. It didn't occur to anybody to ask what is happening at that time during the night. I asked and discovered the customer is doing disk maintenance - defrag/etc - and a backup at the same time. I told him to not run disk maintenance when he is trying to run a backup.
