Here's another plane that I've rehabbed. When I received this Jack, it was rusty, covered in grime, and neglected for decades probably. The tote was also busted in half and the knob was painted with gold paint.
I knew I'd have fun with it.
I took pics of it when it was still covered in grime, but I must have deleted them by mistake, or dropped them into the wrong folder, which depresses me since I really wanted to show this from start to finish, but I did locate a few of the pics from prior to the refinishing.
I started by steam cleaning it. With all the grease and grime that was on it, it seemed the fastest way to get down to metal.
Pics after the goop is gone, as you can see not much japanning remained.
Well, as you know Japanning isn't there just to look good. It's there to protect the surfaces against rust. When this much of the japanning is gone, I feel that it should be replaced.

I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out, considering how ugly and unloved it was when I found it.
Now it needs to find someone who will use it and take of it for the next few decades.
