UPDATE:
Everyday she shows more and more improvement. She's not the same girl as she was though, she now gets tired scrambling eggs! They still have no idea what this was. Thank you all for your concern and well wishes.

Yes, much better now, she went back to work Monday. She tires easily but each day is better than before. Her health insurance started June 1st but anything related to this is considered a prior condition/illness and not covered.
$107,000 in medical bills. She isn't a pregnant teenager or illegal and does have a job so wiping the slate isn't a option. Add in her student loans, which she is paying. Then 3 more semesters she's a Vet. That's just another 60k give or take a few k's.
She is not a slacker. She took the train from RI to NY 3 days a week to attend Cornells Vet program for 2 years. Then transfered to Tufts. She worked during this time, and we helped. But this med debt is crushing.
Three options, 1]Win the lottery. 2]I croak and my life insurance pays off her debt,,I'll do anything for my kids but I'm really not a big fan of that happening. 3]File bankruptcy.
Always paid my bills and hate to say it but bankruptcy looks good.
Great to know she's doing better.
Gosh, I can't imagine starting out with 170k in the hole. She should be able to bargain down the medical bills, but still....the sheer amount looks insurmountable.
My continued best wishes for all of you.
Days have blurred into weeks into months JoAnn. Thought she had a cold/flu coming early April, progessively got worse then mid/late April it really got bad and she went to the ER where she works/ed to see a doc she knows. He admitted her. Next day bad weather grounded the Lifeflight chopper so she went to RI Hosp by a Life Pak ambulance accomanied by a Doc, 2 nurses. The 30 or so mile trip was just under or over $7,000.
To this day they don't have a clue what it was. From what I understand cultures were sent to the CDC or some lab like that. Some sort of infection that started in her throat, to her upper respiratory tract, ears, sinus. She was on that synthetic morphine for pain, antibiotics weren't touching it.
She's now eating and putting on the weight she lost, back to work 6 hours a day, able to sleep. Hope we or anyone else doesn't have a nightmare like this happen to them. Because of my COPD doc s wouldn't let me see her, said if I caught it with my lungs being comprimised it would probably kill me.
She works in an ER...Could this probably be a workmans comp case?
If it was an infection she caught in the ER, it sure sounds like a
possible work comp case to me.
It sure is an avenue that your daughter can persue.
Best wishes for a good outcome for your daughter and your family.
Many times you have to fight the workmans compensation
insurance companies; they don't easily part with their money.
