Default Has anyone read the Harry Potter series...

to their kids? If so how did you handle the books getting darker as they go along?

My daughter read the first book.

I got her the second one on CD from the Library and she never listened to it.

We discussed what aspects reflected in their view as wrong to do. How treating others as you want to be treated goes futher than damage control can ever go.
(My Niece, My kids were in their late teens when the books came out.)
If there is going to be a fight anyway you look at it, then win the fight. You may end up with a friend.

If there is something in the book that you do not understand ask, and your mom and I will try to explain it to you in a way you can understand.

Box you need to read the series completly befor reading to the kids. At least you can change what you would like by leaving out that part.

They've seen all of the movies except the last one that's about to come out on DVD in a few days. The content of the books is a bit different, more, more nuanced.

I would have thought that at their ages, they'd miss most of that...

The youngest does, but the oldest gets a lot of the nuanced stuff. I'm about a third of the way through the first book and she's been asking some interesting questions and making some very interesting observations as we go along. It seems that for every hour of reading there's about a half hour of discussion.
