Default China hutch

this one is for the boss The finish is supposed to be light as shown, she did not want it to match the cabinets on the off chance we move someday

Her design, made to replace a very ugly married piece that was bought at auction years ago.

This is the piece I should have built second, we are still living with a very ugly dining table.

two things I do not like were both in execution on my part the raised panels are burnished (the knife must be close to dull).

I should have anticipated the mass of the pine cone pulls on the bottom doors.

It may cause me to do the lower doors differently.

The smaller upper glass is to be etched so it has not been installed at this time.

Wider stiles on lower doors, or loose the pulls and go with ones on the drawers and the upper doors.

I think the top of the base could be beefier. Looks thin.
My first thought was to wrap a wider molding on the top, but that may not be do-able, as your top rail above the pullout isn't very wide.

Agree on the pulls being too large and the top looking better if beefier...however it appears as though the intent was to keep everything...delicate...for want of a better word. I believe that smaller pulls would pull it all back into balance though.

I especially like the addtional molding detail under the crown.

You haven't made that dining table yet?

Well neither have I.

Agree with wider stiles.

The top became a point of contention. I did want it to be thicker, in retrospect I should have stood my ground. The counterpoint to be clear had to do with the pullout. I mocked up a thicker face and the determination was it started looking too massive.

Should I ever do another similar piece I will make the top thicker.

Joe

I really like the crown molding work and the bead detail in the carcass below it. It makes a great ensemble.

I agree that if the already drilled holes for the pine cone handles allow it, I'd go with vertical versions of the drawer pulls.

The oval mirror is a nice tough.

Ditto the door pulls. Once the lighter pullers are on, the top will balance out somewhat.

Very nice piece. Nice detail and very well executed.

I really like it Joe. The crown molding, fluted corners, oval mirror, and the glass panels really accent the piece nicely. I even like the pine cones although it would be nice if they were smaller.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but if the base could have been 3/4" higher to allow for a piece of cove molding under the top then I think it would have looked even better.
