Default Amboyna Awl

I really enjoyed making the macassar ebony marking knife, so I ordered some more kits from Bob Z and made this amboyna burl awl.

I'm going to make a matching amboyna burl marking knife to become a set.

I highly recommend these high quality Czech Edge kits and for those of you that haven't jumped on the bandwagon yet... Get one and do it!

Thanks Bob, for putting out some well made, easy to make, and fun, tool kits.

Please note: Design used by permission of Czeck Edge.

Wow John, that is some pretty wood!

I also like the shape you've come up with.

Thanks Jim,

Actually I plagiarized the shape of Bob's production awls from his website.

That looks so great and pretty.

Wish I had some of that wood.

Guess I better start looking for some.

Default Wow, Looks nice.

John,
Do you remember what size blank you used to turn the handle?
I've got a nice piece of Briar Burl I thinking about using.

I've never made the awl, but the blank looks like it's probably 2 x 2 x 3" long.

I don't know what size blank John started with butfrom the Czeck Edge site:
Quote:
Turned from exotic hardwood, the knob is 1 3/8" wide and 3 1/4" long...
Depending on your method to turning it, the blank size can be 1.50" to 1.625" if you want to end up with the same approximate dimensions.
